West Allis, WI, May 15 – Mark Fogel of West Bend, collected his second consecutive win at the historic Milwaukee Mile oval during the Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series season opener held at the historic Milwaukee Mile oval. Fogel ran in the top two positions for most of the 150-lap contest and took the lead from Don Lunsford at lap 26. The "Bema Incorporated / Klement’s Sausage 150" enduro started 53 entrants including the full size "stock car" division, the 4-cylinder "small car" division and the “V-6” division. All divisions competed at the same time. Fogel was first overall followed by Brad Hetzel and Mark Johler. All three reached the Milwaukee Mile podium and earned huge trophies for their efforts plus prize money. Johler recorded the enduro win in the "small car" class followed by Steve Bayer. First in the “stock car” division was Fogel. Fogel was also first in the “A” class division over Hetzel. In the “B” class, it was the team of Frank Sylvester and Steven Markey over Brad Jones. The winner in the V-6 division was Brad Nelson, the 2009 Champion for the Series. All trophy awards were courtesy of Bema Incorporated of Elmhurst, IL The top five in each class received plaque awards plus prize money. The awards were courtesy of the Klement's Sausage Co. of Milwaukee and Paulie's Pub of West Allis. The 150 lap main event started with Louis Chatroop taking the lead at the one lap marker with Lunsford close behind. The red flag came out at lap two as a few cars collided in turn one making the entire field scramble. It appeared as though the tire from Mike Herwald’s car came loose necessitating a red flag situation but in reality was the cap of the tire. Lunsford took charge as the field went green with Chatroop in the runner up position followed by Jim Plautz and Mark Tomasi. Fogel was on the move from his back row starting spot to move in to second place by lap 15. Fogel went by Lunsford at lap 26 and the two were inseparable up to the mandatory refueling pit stop at lap 38. The top five at this point were Fogel, Lunsford, Hetzel, Johler and Plautz. After the break in the action, Fogel was once again the class of the field but he could not shake Lunsford or Hetzel as they were waiting for an opportunity. Hetzel slipped back but Lunsford kept pace for the next 30 circuits as the next fuel stop would occur on lap 75. Fogel held a four-second advantage over Lunsford at this point. The running order now had Fogel out front followed by Lunsford, Hetzel, Johler and Bayer * The 150 lap main event took a break to let the Vintage Racers have a chance to compete with their nostalgic cars for a 25-lap event. Bob Heine set the early pace in his ’69 Chevelle with Gary Mitidiaro close behind in his ’71 Camaro. Mitidiaro flew by Heine at lap six and the battle was on. Ken Hutchens, driving a ’66 Chevelle Smokey Yunick replica car stuck his nose in for second place on lap 9 and by lap 11 went out in front. It looked as though any of these three could win the event at this point but by lap 15 Mitidiaro’s car began to miss-fire and he was out of the event by lap 19. Heine looked like he was going to cruise to victory but Hutchens fought back to take the lead at lap 20. Heine apparently did not want to see any more rear bumper and went back out front a lap later, which he held to the finish. Fogel once again jumped out front after the break with Lunsford chasing him down. Hetzel caught Fogel at lap 86 and the two were inseparable up to the next stop. The top five going in to the final segment of the 150-lap event were Fogel, Hetzel, Lunsford, Johler and Bayer. Johler made a great pit stop to move him in to the third spot with 38 laps to go. Fogel soon left distance between himself and Johler but could not get rid of Hetzel. The two would be side-to-side, front to back for the remainder of the 150-lap event, swapping positions constantly. Hetzel made a last lap charge but could not beat the handling of Fogels Caprice. The top five at the finish were Fogel, Hetzel, Johler, Lunsford and Bayer. Fogel dedicated the race win to his father Ralph who passed away unexpectedly in late 2009. The next Series event is scheduled for Sunday afternoon May 23 at the Rockford Speedway (Loves Park, IL) for the running of the “Artie’s Towing 330” enduro.
