Speciale & Condrad Enduro Winners At Dells Raceway Park July 20

Wisconsin Dells, WI, July 20 – Art Speciale of Bartlett, IL, collected his second consecutive Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series win of the season and first at the Dells Raceway Park. Speciale was in contention for most of the Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 250” and was able to edge Mark Fogel by a few car lengths for the win.

Speciale was the overall winner and first in the "A" Class over Fogel. First in the "B" Class was Tom DeYoung over Brad Jones. Julie Hayes collected her third V-6 Series win of the season over Tim Goulet.

Jason Condrad recorded his third Midwest Enduro Small Car Series win of the 2008 season during the running of the “Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 125” small car enduro. Condrad was first over Mike Jucius.

Shannon McCarthy and Michelle Lemery had a close battle in the early running of the 15-lap “powder puff” event for the Midwest Enduro Small Car Series cars. McCarthy took charge with five to go to take the win over Lemery and Katelyn Helfenstein.

SMALL CAR

Condrad, the current 2008 Midwest Enduro Small Car Series point leader, got a great jump on the field as the green flag was displayed from starter Kevin Lucas. Chris Jones stayed with Condrad for the first four circuits of the 125 lap event but went in to the pit area for repairs. Todd Booker and Mike McKay were now close behind Condrad but both went in to the pit area at lap five and eight respectively. At lap 10, Condrad had a four second cushion over Roger Schultz with Steven Mueller, Mark Johler and Jucius in tow. Mueller was even with Condrad by lap 16 and moved ahead by lap 36. The two swapped the lead several times up to the 75 lap marker as Johler came in to the mix when he caught the two at that point. The top five with 50 laps to go were Mueller, Condrad, Johler, Adam Johnson and Jucius. Mueller seemed like he was the one to beat as he once again moved ahead of Condrad and Johler who were one second behind the leader. The race was about to change on lap 109 when the red flag flew for a loose wheel off the Bill Mueller entry. As the red flag and lights were displayed immediately from starter Kevin Lucas, Steven Mueller along with a host of multiple drivers disregarded the safety element of the red flag and passed several stopped cars on the track. The move was costly for Steven Mueller and the other drivers affected as it resulted in an automatic five-lap penalty for moving on the red. (In some enduro events, this may have resulted in automatic disqualification). Steven Mueller led the field the rest of the way but with the penalty issued at the end of the event moved Condrad in to victory circle. The top five after the official finish were Condrad, Jucius, Steven Mueller, Johler and Logan Schnake. Johnson was later disqualified in post race inspection.

STOCK CAR & V-6

With the lowest car count on hand for the 2008 season, the running of the "Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 250" Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series main event was going to be one of the fastest paced events of the year. Brian Blenker pulled out quickly in front of Ryan Nuti. Nuti moved ahead of Blenker on lap eight with Jay Bozart in tow. The race was for second at lap ten between Charlie Pinkalla, Bozart and Blenker. At the lap 25 marker, Nuti held a one-second advantage over Pinkalla followed by Bozart, Blenker and Tom Ruh. Nuti started to distance himself for the next twenty-five circuits with Blenker heading to the pit area on lap 50 for a flat. Just as the first of three refueling pit stops was to take place on lap 66 Ruh was on the move as the top five at the break were Nuti, Ruh, Pinkalla, Fogel and Speciale.

After the break, the race was going to be challenging for Nuti as he now had Speciale and Fogel on his rear bumper. The one and only red for the day came out on lap 77 for a Donnie Paskiewicz right front tire departure. Paskiewicz would return. Nuti, Fogel and Speciale were the show now however as the three were beginning to lap the entire field with Nuti and Fogel swapping the lead several times depending on traffic. When the field reached the second pit stop on lap 131, Nuti was out in front of Fogel and Speciale with Pinkalla, Darryl Traber and Don Lunsford one lap in their rears.

Nuti once again grabbed the lead and started to make some distance on Fogel and Speciale. Nuti’s dream of his first win of the season stopped on lap 160 with a flat tire. Now the show was going to be between Fogel and Speciale for the win if they could keep the tires on the car. In the hot sun, it was difficult to use the outer groove of the 1/3 mile paved oval and lapped traffic would play a huge part to the conclusion of the event. At the final pit stop on lap 189, the top five included Fogel, Speciale, Lunsford, Traber and Pinkalla.

The final 61 circuits appeared once again to be the battle between Fogel and Speciale for the win. They were still the only two cars on the lead lap. There also was a battle for third as Lunsford and Traber were on the same lap, one lap behind the leaders. Fogel got the jump on Speciale as Speciale took a little more time in the pit area to make sure his car was ready to go. Fogel kept a two-second advantage over Speciale up to lap 225 when both were nose to tail. Speciale moved ahead on lap 229 and held the point to the finish by a one-second margin over Fogel. Traber got by Lunsford with 15 to go to claim third with Lunsford taking fourth and current point leader Tom Barnharst rounding out the top five.

The next Series event is set for Monday September 1 at the Milwaukee Mile (West Allis, WI). The “Labor Day 150” will feature all three divisions competing at the same time on the historic two-mile road course. Preliminary events will begin at 12:00.
