Oregon, WI, July 22- Mike Kasperek claimed his first win of the season in Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series competition during the running of the “Steve’s 51 / Newville Auto Salvage 150” enduro held at the Madison International Speedway. The 150 lap event was just part of the track’s “Night of Destruction” program.
Kasperek was the overall winner and first in the “A” class over Jeff Jeras. In the “B” class Mike VanHowe claimed his first win over Ryan Nuti and in the “C” class Jay LeBrun edged Tom DeYoung for the win.
The 150 lap event on the new 1/4 mile track was likely going to be intense as the new track was never tested before with this size field on the tight course. Second row starter Tom Arnold got a jump on pole sitter Tom O’Rourke as the field was let loose. Arnold settled back and by lap 25 Brian Blenker was out front with Matt Born close behind followed by Kasperek, Rick Cregger and Mike Beagel. Blenker had a comfortable six second lead over Born at the lap 50 marker but the gap closed quickly at that point as Born forged ahead by lap 55. As
the field stopped for the first and only pit stop on lap 78 Born was the leader followed by Kasperek, Blenker, Matt Schlick and Tom Barnharst.
After the mandatory stop Born once again pulled ahead of the field and was retaining a six second cushion over second running Kasperek. The field was slowed for a red flag on lap 86 for a fire that started under the Don Lunsford entry after a transmission problem. As the race resumed Kasperek cut the deficit in half to three seconds behind Born. Kasperek caught Born on lap 97 after a yellow flag incident. During the next 15 circuits Born began to lose distance between himself and Kasperek after developing mechanical problems and bowed out of the event on lap 113. Kasperek received no other challenges for the remainder of the event and finished one lap ahead of second running Jeras at the finish line. The top five at the stripe were Kasperek, Jeras, Barnharst, Schlick and VanHowe.
The next event for the Series is slated for Monday September 4 at the Lake Geneva Raceway for the running of the Klement’s Sausage sponsored “Mark “Tiny” Amborn
Memorial Labor Day 301”. A full afternoon of activities is planned. For further information contact (262) 895-6682 from 5-9 pm. For technical questions contact Kevin Rogers at (262) 728-6240. For up to date information visit the Series website at www.midwestenduro.com
