Lake Geneva, WI, October 7 - The 2006 Midwest Enduro Stock Car and Small Car Series season concluded at the Lake Geneva Raceway. West Bend
driver Mark Fogel collected his first Series win of the season by winning the "Goblin 250" enduro main event. The nights activities also claimed the final enduro events at the facility as it closes it's doors after the 2006 season.
Fogel was the overall winner and first in the "A" class over Matt Schlick. In the "B" class it was Tom Carr over Allen Delius and in the "C" class it was Jim Miller over Chris Prince.
Todd Booker comfortably claimed the 4-cylinder Small Car Series "Goblin 100". Booker held a 16 second lead over second place finisher Mark Johler at the line. The top five at the line were Booker, Johler, Evan Townsend, Louis Chatroop and Lori Jacoby. Mike Haugan, who finished eleventh in the final event was crowned the 2006 Midwest Enduro Small Car Series point champion. The top ten in the final Small Car Series point standings include; Haugan, Jasyn Brown, Dylan Helfenstein, Roger Schultz, Becky Pinkalla, Chatroop, Rod Brossart, Mike Geringer, Chris Jones and Steve Doherty. Chatroop was also crowned the 2006 Chuck's Radiator "rookie of the year".
In the Pinkalla Auto Solutions "Goblin 15" powder puff event, Angela Shaw was victorious over Tanya Galloway. There was some excitement during the 15
lap event on lap 6 when Michelle Curcio's mount started on fire after the engine expired. At the finish it was Shaw, Galloway, Niki Nuti, Natalie McCarthy and Kari VeZain.
The 2006 Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series point
chase went down to the final event of the season with Darryl Traber holding a slim seven point margin over defending Series champion Matt Schlick. The title marked the fourth for Traber. The 2006 top ten finishing drivers include; Traber, Schlick, Ryan Nuti, Craig Phillips, Tom Arnold, Tom Barnharst, Tom DeYoung, Pat Kinjerski, Jay LeBrun and Gerry Galloway.
Ryan Nuti claimed the 2006 Chuck's Radiator "rookie of the year" honors. Nuti already held the honors prior to the final event and won the title convincingly over second place finishing Jim Miller.
The top three finishers in the "children's costume contest" included Rain Fagenbaum finishing first and receiving a $75 Toy's "R" Us gift certificate. Second place went to Suede Fagenbaum
and third went to Samantha Pinkalla. The second and third place finishers received a $50 and $25 gift certificate respectively sponsored by the Series. The bicycles sponsored by Balestreri Trucking were won by Kyle Clasen and Dylan Poch. A special "goodie bag' was won by Ryan Digges.
The 250 lap main event was paced early by race sponsor "Big Al' Kuphal from his pole position. Craig Phillips was quick to the point and moved ahead by lap two. Phillips was on a mission as he held a ten second lead over second running Art Speciale at the 25 lap marker as the field was slowed for a major wreck on backstretch of the 1/3 mile paced oval. As Speciale and Fogel would do battle after starting at the rear of the 58 car field, the two were starting to close on Phillips as the laps were winding down to the first of three pit stops on lap 65. The top five at this point and the only cars on the lead lap were Phillips, Speciale, Fogel, Jared Pinkalla and Rick Cregger.
After the break, Phillips and Speciale broke out from the rest of the field and were side by side though lap 75. As Phillips began to slide back in the field with a tire going down Speciale took it up a notch as he and Fogel headed to the next stop on lap 130 as the only cars on the lead lap. The top five at this point were Speciale, Fo
gel, Schlick, Cregger and Phillips.
Fogel and Speciale once again took off from the field as they battled for the top spot. The field was slowed on lap 140 for a Mario Stella rollover on the back straightaway. At this point the safety crew spotted a gas leak from the Speciale car and Speciale went in to the pit area to correct the problem leaving himself one lap in the rears of Fogel as he made his way back on to the track. Fogel now had a full one lap cushion on the entire field as they went in to the pit area for the last time on lap 187 for the final mandatory refueling pit stop.
With Fogel now a full lap on the entire field it was going to be tough for anyone to make up the difference unless Fogel was to have a misfutune of some sort. The race seemed to getting more intense as the laps were winding down. This event had the most damaged cars it seemed as the full moon glowed. Schlick was mounting a charge as he was trying to get on the lead lap and gain as many points on Traber as the laps were
winding down for the season championship. Traber was caught up in a late spin by Jim Miller and managed to make it the end as Schlick stayed ahead of Fogel to remain on the lead lap to the end. Fogel led the rest of the way to capture his first overall win of the season. Most of the field was still running after the 250 lap event after another action packed event. The top five running order at the stripe were Fogel, Schlick, Speciale, Cregger and Pat Kinjerski.
Next on the Series agenda is a drivers meeting on Saturday November 11 at the Low Places Saloon right at the Lake Geneva Raceway grounds. The meeting will discuss the 2007 season, rules, etc.
Tickets are now available for the 12th Annual Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series awards banquet scheduled for January 27, 2006.
