running of the "Roger Helland Memorial 250". Hutchison held the point for the first five circuits before Gerry Galloway took over one lap later with Cregger and Chuck Pinkalla in hot pursuit. Pinkalla took over at lap 23 and at the 25 lap marker it was Pinkalla out front followed by Matt Schlick, Galloway, Tom Arnold and Cregger. Schlick closed the gap in next 25 laps and was one second behind race leader Pinkalla at 50 lap point. As the field slowed for the first of three mandatory pit stops during the 250 lap event on lap 65, Pinkalla was eight seconds ahead of Schlick followed by Cregger, Arnold and Galloway.
The event was going to change a bit after the break as Pinkalla had some mechanical problems and began to slow considerably from the torrid pace he set earlier. After a great pit stop, Art Speciale went past Pinkalla on lap 69 to take over the lead. At the 75 lap marker the running order was Speciale, Arnold, Cregger, Pinkalla and Galloway. A red flag slowed the field on lap 88 for a loose tire on the speedway. As the field approached the next stop at lap 130 Speciale had a five second lead over Cregger followed by Galloway, Traber and Ryan Nuti. Speciale, Cregger, Galloway and Traber were the only cars on the lead lap at this point.
Cregger darted out front as the field was again on their way. Speciale would once again forge ahead on lap 138 but Cregger would not let go of the leader as the two became very attached as they circled the 1/3 mile paved oval. At lap 150 the running order was Speciale, Cregger, Traber, Galloway and Tom Ruh. As Galloway went down a lap to the leader around the 165 lap marker, Traber was beginning to make his move and by the 175 lap point was only two seconds behind the leader after nearly going down one lap earlier in the contest. As the field was approaching the final pit stop on lap 190 Traber caught Speciale on lap 188 and held the point to the stop followed by Cregger, Speciale, Galloway and Ruh. Traber, Cregger and Speciale were the only cars remaining on the lead lap.
The final stage was set as Speciale and Traber got a good jump on the rest of the field and were set to duel it out for the final 60 laps. Speciale held the point over Traber for most of the next 50 circuits as the two dealt with heavy traffic. Traber would loose ground but regain and challenge Speciale numerous times side by side. During this time Cregger remained five to ten seconds off the lead pace. With two to go, heavy traffic ensued in front of Speciale and Traber and a few slower cars spun on the back stretch collecting Speciale and resulted in a flat right rear tire for Traber. Traber was forced to slow considerably for the last one and one half circuits for the deflated right rear tire. As Traber entered turn three, Cregger went around Traber to take the win off of turn four as Traber crossed the line second rear ended solidly by Speciale as he regained to take third followed by Craig Phillips and Ruh to round out the top five at the finish. The win for three time Series champion Cregger was the first at the track during his prosperous career.
