Jeras And Schultz Victorious In Dells Motor Speedway Enduro Doubleheader
Wisconsin Dells, WI, May 6 - Waukon, IA driver Jeff Jeras made it two for two for in 2006 Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series competition as he came home first in the running of the “Alakai Hotel & Suites 250” enduro held at the Dells Motor Speedway. Jeras also claimed season opener at the Lake Geneva Raceway. Roger Schultz jr. picked up his first win of the season in Midwest Enduro Small Car Series competition during the running of the “Alakai Hotel & Suites 100” enduro for the 4-cylinder class.
Jeras was the overall winner and first in the “A” class over Art Speciale. In the “B” class it was Don Lunsford over Gerry Galloway and in the “C” class it was Ryan Nuti over Craig Phillips.
After waiting a week because of the April 29 rainout the season opener for the Midwest Enduro Small Car Series was sure to be exciting. Even despite the low car count, the action for the lead became apparent early in the 100 lap event as Lenny Adams and Rod Brossart battled hard for the lead. Adams looked like he would capture his second win at the track in as many starts as he jumped out early with Brossart in hot pursuit. Brossart made a great move on Adams around lap traffic at lap ten and looked like he was going to take command for the rest of the event. Brossart held a consistent two second lead over Adams for the next 50 circuits but vanished in a hurry at the 60 lap marker as Adams was now on his rear bumper as Brossart seemed to slow. For now apparent reason Adams mount lost power on lap 63 and coasted in to the pit area and through for the day. On lap 94 Brossart hit the wall hard after going three wide through lapped traffic and broke the right front suspension with only five laps remaining. Schultz quickly inherited the lead and took the rest of the field to the stripe for the win.
The drivers for the Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series were apparently anxious to get the 250 la
p main event rolling as a early red flag was waived for the car of Glenn Tomasi. Tomasi apparently lost control of his ‘76 Malibu on lap 3 and hit the pit wall on the backstretch and was stuck on top of it. After the lengthy delay to remove his car and to reinstall the wall the pace of the 250 main event was fast and furious. As the green was again displayed it was Donnie Paskiewicz leading field with Rick Cregger in tow. At the 25 lap marker the field moved around a little as Mark Fogel was shown as the leader followed by Cregger, John Waldman, Paskiewicz and Chuck Pinkalla. The lead drivers once again changed during the next 25 laps as Speciale was shown as the leader at this point with Frank Calabrese, Darryl Traber, Pinkalla and Lunsford in hot pursuit.
Jeras who started from the back row in the field of 45 cars, now started to make his move around the lap 80 marker as he was now shown in the top five. Jeras’s bid for the lead came on lap 90 as he was now in front. Jeras remained in front until the second of three refueling pit stops on lap 130. At this point the only cars on the lead lap were Jeras, Calabrese and Traber.
After the break, Jeras was still setting a fast pace but Calabrese and Traber were gaining ground as Calabrese was on his rear bumper by the next and last refueling pit stop on lap 195. Calabrese was one second behind Jeras at this point and Traber six second behind Jeras. The running order going in to the final stop had Jeras out front folowed by Calabrese, Traber, Matt Born and Lunsford.
As the car
s were put back on the grid after the stop Jeras was in the front row with Traber in the second row and Calabrese in the third row when the field was once again displayed the green flag. Jeras quickly darted out front with Traber now in second as they both got a good jump on the rest of the field. Traber instantly had mechanical problems as a wheel bearing went bad on the right front of his car and slowed considerably off the pace. Calabrese never could get any closer than five seconds behind the leader as Jeras set a torrid pace for the final 55 circuit of the 250 lap event. The running order at the stripe had Jeras out front followed by Art Speciale, Lunsford, Schlick and Traber. There were four disqualification’s during post race inspection after the cars of Calabrese, Born, Tom Carr and Larry Wiedenhoeft all were over in compression.
The next Series event is slated for Monday May 29 at the Lake Geneva Raceway (Lake Geneva, WI) for the running of the annual “Cherry Bomber 299” enduro. For further information contact (262) 895-6682 from 5-9 pm. or leave a message.
