Kasperek Takes Second Win Of the Season At Madison Int. Speedway Enduro

Oregon, WI, August 14 - Veteran Enduro driver Mike Kasperek claimed his second win of the season in Midwest Enduro Stock Car Series competition during the running of the "Buddig / Old Wisconsin Sausage 250" enduro held at the Madison International Speedway. The 1997 Series Champion finished second in the 250 lap but claimed the win after initial race winner Tom Waldman failed post race inspection.

Kasperek was the overall winner and first in the "A" class over current Series point leader Matt Schlick. In the "B" class Ron Vandolah claimed his first win of the season over Pat Kinjerski and in the "C" class Julie DeNood won convincingly over Dan Brancecum.

Kevin "Diceman" Hanzel won the Auto Connectionz sponsored "rollover contest" for the demo derby cars. In derby action Ryan Nuti won his second event of the season in the compact division with Randy Page claiming the unlimited division.

The 250 lap event on the 1/2 mile was likely going to be fast paced as the unusual small field of entries started on the grid. Waldman started on the pole of the event and made a statement as he powered away with Phil Speciale in tow at the drop of the green. The two swapped the lead several times for the first 15 circuits with Speciale getting the upper hand by lap 16 to 40. The field did stop on lap 36 to let Bob Nuti get out of his disabled car after an axle broke in his ‘73 Monte Carlo. Waldman grabbed the lead on lap 41 and retained the position up to the first refueling pit stop on lap 53. At this point the top five running order were Waldman, Speciale, Schlick, Frank Calabrese and Kasperek.

During the next 50 circuits the race was beginning to hold some character as the event was seemingly a race between the four cars of Waldman, Speciale, Kasperek and Schlick. Schlick was deemed the leader as the field was led to the pit area at lap 102 for the second of four refueling pit stops.

Waldman and Schlick went at it for the next ten circuits after the break with Waldman getting the upper hand at lap 112. The field slowed briefly for another red flag for a tire departing from Jay LeBrun on lap 119. Waldman started to pull away from the field at this point and by the time the field was ready for the third pit stop on lap 154 he held a 13 second cushion over second place running Schlick.

Waldman was seemingly not going to be contested for the rest of the event. A Geoff VeZain - Al Kuphal incident on lap 168 closed the field and left Kuphals mount destroyed after hitting the front stretch wall head on. The melee also involved LeBrun and Scott Bodoh. Kuphal and Bodoh did not return for the remainder of the event Kasperek closed to within four seconds of the leader near the end of the event but could catch Waldman. At the stripe it was Waldman, Kasperek, Schlick Speciale and Rick Cregger edging out Calabrese by a nose to round out the top five.

The next event for the Series is slated for Monday September 5 at the Lake Geneva Raceway for the running of the Klement’s Sausage sponsored "Mark "Tiny" Amborn Memorial Labor Day 301". A full afternoon of activities is planned. For further information contact (262) 895-6682 from 5-9 pm. For technical questions contact Kevin Rogers at (262) 728-6240.
